As if or what? Expectations and optimization in a simple macroeconomic environment

چکیده
In this paper we report the results of a laboratory experiment, in which we observed the behavior of agents in a simple macroeconomic setting. The structure of the economy was only partially known to the players which is a realistic feature of our experiment. We investigate whether subjects manage to approach optimal behavior even if they lack important information. Furthermore, we analyze subjects’ perceptions of the model and whether their behavior is consistent with their perceptions. The full information model predicts changes of employment correctly, but not the level of employment. In the aggregate, subjects have correct perceptions, although individual perceptions are biased. We finally show that deviations from the full information solution are due to optimization failures than than misperceptions. JEL classification: D01, D83, D84, B41, C91

Policy Requirements under Different Macroeconomic Conditions: An Application of Micro CPI Data
The purpose of the paper is to answer several questions. First, if inflation, business cycles, and exchange rate changes are viewed as representative of the state of the economy, is there any evidence of the difference in the type of reaction of the economic sector to monetary and fiscal policies in different macroeconomic conditions? Second, if there is a difference in the type of economic r...

The variables responsible for worker alienation in the under- developed countries are divided into two categories: cultural and organizational factors. Identification of these two types of factors in those countries should help us understand employee alienation better than that of the existing western models. In developing countries, there exist three types of behavioural dispositions (or eth...
متن کاملMisperceptions, heterogeneous expectations and macroeconomic dynamics
We investigate the extent to which misperceptions about the economy can become self reinforcing and thereby contribute to time-varying macroeconomic dynamics. To do so, we build a New Keynesian model with long-horizon expectations and dynamic predictor selection. Because agents solve multiperiod optimisation problems (households maximise expected lifetime utility and rms maximise the discounte...

The study compared economic efficiency among smallholder farmers who practiced low external input technology [LEIT] and high external input technology [HEIT] agriculture in a harsh macroeconomic environment typified by inadequate fertilizer subsidy in Imo State, Nigeria. Cross sectional data generated from 160 smallholder farmers randomly selected from 2 out of the 3 agricultural zones in Imo S...
متن کاملIrrational Expectations and Econometric Practice Discussion of Orphanides and Williams, “Inflation Scares and Forecast-Based Monetary Policy”
Athanasios Orphanides and John C. Williams’ excellent conference paper, “Inflation Scares and Forecast-Based Monetary Policy,” contributes importantly to the new and rapidly growing branch of the literature on bounded rationality and learning in macroeconomics. Their paper, like many others, derives interesting and useful theoretical results that show how the introduction of bounded rationality...
